170 peacekeepers leave for Ivory Coast

A 170-member team of Bangladesh Army, led by Lt Col AKM Nurul Islam, left Dhaka for Ivory Coast on Wednesday night to work under the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission there.

A chartered flight of the United Nations carried the first army team of peacekeepers, said an ISPR release yesterday.

Some 3,000 troops will be sent gradually to replace the Bangladesh contingent participating in peacekeeping mission in Ivory Coast. The replacement of troops will be completed by October this year.

Members of the Bangladesh Army first joined the UN peacekeeping mission in Ivory Coast in 2004. At present, over 3,000 troops are working there.

Earlier, over 2,600 army men returned home from Ivory Coast after completing their mission.
