Tripartite meet agrees on TU in RMG units


A meeting of government, RMG owners and workers yesterday forged a consensus that exercise of trade union right in the export industry would not be restricted. The also agreed to work together and restore discipline in the violence-ridden sector.

"There will be no differences among the stakeholders," the meeting was told on unison. State Minister for Labour and Employment Aman Ullah Aman chaired the tripartite meeting in the conference room of his ministry.

Commerce Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, RMG owners' representative Tipu Munshi, Annisul Huq and Salam Murshedy, and workers' representatives Shajahan Khan MP, Shah Mohammed Abu Zafar MP, Wazedul Islam Khan and Abul Kashem Chowdhury were present.

The meeting decided to give appointment letters to the workers, granting the female ones maternity leave as per labour law and a day's weekly holiday on a convenient day.

It also decided to issue identity cards for the workers, if necessary, and withdraw cases filed against the workers following the recent widespread violence.

The meeting decided to appoint more advisers to strengthen the six-member wage board formed earlier for the RMG industry.

Under another decision, the representatives of the government, the RMG workers and owners would visit factories regularly to maintain order.
