June 11 Dhaka Siege
14-party to block roads at 10 points

The opposition combine yesterday finalised their preparations for the June 11 Dhaka siege programme which would be followed by even tougher agitation programmes.

The Awami League (AL)-led 14-party opposition combine picked 10 points in and around Dhaka city to set up roadblocks during their Dhaka siege.

The points are Dhaka Chittagong Highway at Kanchpur, Sadarghat, Keraniganj, Postagola, Savar, Amin Bazar, Gabtoli, Tongi, Ashulia and Kamalapur.

The opposition combine leaders in a preparatory meeting at AL's central office on Bangabandhu Avenue directed district leaders to set up barricades in their respective areas so that no vehicles could proceed towards the capital on that day. Fourteen-party coordinator Abdul Jalil chaired the meeting with the leaders of different districts adjacent to the capital.

"The senior leaders asked us to create roadblocks near Tangail bypass so that no vehicles could go towards Bangabandhu Bridge on June 11," Fazlur Rahman Farook, general secretary of Tangail district unit AL told The Daily Star.

The 14-party will sit with the leaders of city units today to finalise the strategies they would take for the siege.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, Jalil said they would not allow any election in the country under the current Election Commission (EC). Reiterating the opposition's demand for immediate resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and two other commissioners, he said they can not make the revised voter list as they are known as the 'most controversial persons' in the country.

"The CEC and two other commissioners must quit EC in order to ensure a free, fair and neutral election in the country," Jalil said. He said the ruling coalition is hatching conspiracy to cling on to power sensing the people have turned their back on them for their misrule.

"They are making confusing and irrelevant comments blaming the opposition to deceive people," Jalil said adding, "The BNP-Jamaat coalition will not be allowed to conspire against the people."

Jalil also criticised BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan's statement in which Bhuiyan accused the opposition of creating a situation in the country that is beyond the constitution. Urging Bhuiyan not to make such irrational comments, Jalil said they are carrying out a just movement to keep the democratic process in the country alive.

AL Presidium Member Abdur Razzak and Motia Chowdhury, Workers' Party President Rashed Khan Menon and General Secretary Bimal Biswas also spoke in the meeting.
