Awami League (AL) lawmakers at a parliamentary standing committee meeting yesterday demanded a parliamentary body to probe the recent unrest in garment factories. "We need to unearth why the workers took to the streets," AL lawmaker and committee member Shahjahan Khan said at the meeting. Committee chief Mosharraf Hossian Mongu however rejected the opposition demand and told the meeting that an investigation committee headed by the state minister for labour and employment is working on the matter. The parliamentary standing committee on labour and employment ministry discussed various problems in the garment sector. Meeting sources said the committee member and BNP lawmaker MA Hashem claimed that the recent turmoil in the garment sector was created by some vested quarters. "Workers in the garment factories are satisfied with their wages and other facilities. They were not involved with the recent chaos," he said. Shahjahan Khan MP told the newsmen after the meeting that the workers being deprived of their rights started the agitation. He ruled out any foreign inciting into the matter. Shahjahan told journalists after the meeting that a parliamentary committee should be formed to find out the cause of the labour unrest as well as the problems in the garment sector. The standing committee also discussed the formation of a minimum wage board.
