Khaled Khan on his recent works and more...
Ershad Kamol
KHALED Khan has won appreciation for his bold and diverse roles both in TV plays and theatre. Whatever the role is-- hero, anti-hero or a father figure -- Khaled has the potential to articulate the character.Besides acting, Khaled Khan is directing theatre productions. So far he has directed seven stage plays, of which three are for his own troupe Nagorik Natyasampradaya-- Swapnabaj, Muktadhara and Kalshodhya-- three for Kanthashilon-- Bhrityarajtantra, Putulkhela and Karigor-- and for Shubachan Khudhito Pashan. At present Khaled Khan is busy directing a stage play titled Rupoboti, a Shubachan Natya Sangsad production. Talking about the play, Khaled says, "Narrating the tragic life of a village lass, Nasrin Jahan's play features how poverty plays havoc with rationality. I don't like to use a single indigenous performing art form on the urban stage, rather I like to use different folk theatre styles as per the requirement of the sequence. In Rupobati, I'm using the indigenous performing art form pala, folk dance and South Indian performing art form Yakshagana in this play. And the music composition of the play is totally based on folk music." Why is he mostly directing translated and adapted plays? Khaled says, "There is a shortfall of original plays. And the quality contemporary playwrights give their scripts to their respective troupe or friends. That's why we have to depend on world classics." Within a few days Khaled will direct Tagore's Dakghar for Shubachan. Explaining the reasons for directing other troupes rather than his own troupe Nagorik, Khaled asserted "I've done three plays for Nagorik. But, it's true that the structure of theatrical troupes in Bangladesh is small. As a result, the troupes cannot simultaneously run four/five productions. If a troupe has two senior directors, it's difficult for others to direct plays. I understand the reality and am working accordingly. Ensuring professionalism in theatre can solve such problems." Since joining Nagorik Natyasampradaya, Khaled Khan has acted in most of its productions. At the same time he was enlisted in BTV. Khaled said, "My performance as the anti-hero Raihan in the drama serial Shokal Shondhya has taken me to the limelight." Nowadays, Khaled Khan is less interested in acting in TV plays and is selective in his choice of such plays. In the words of Khaled, "Because of rampant commercialism of the TV channels, most of the TV plays are mediocre. I agree that many quality plays are also being aired, however the TV channels should overhaul programme planning based on the taste of the audience." In recognition of his stellar contribution to the cultural world, Khaled Khan has been honoured with the Anyadin award for TV acting and prestigious Zakaria Smrity Padak for theatre activities.
