Tk 221.57cr RCC budget announced

A Tk 221.57 crore budget for Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has been announced for fiscal year (FY) 2006-07. Of the total amount, over Tk 90.9 crore has been shown as revenue income, over Tk 34.31 crore as development grant and over Tk 76.22 crore as project grant. Over Tk 46.66 crore has been earmarked for salaries and other organisational purposes, Tk 6.45 crore for development and road repairing, Tk 12 crore for flood control, Tk 1 crore for sanitation and Tk 75 lakh for education. Announcing the budget yesterday, RCC Mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu said no new tax has been imposed, rather freedom fighters and owners of thatched houses have been relieved of holding taxes. Minu, also a lawmaker, said Rajshahi would be turned into a digital city like developed cities of the world through the introduction of e-governance. "Rajshahi city will be the first to have e-governance. Computers along with necessary manpower will be employed at every ward for this purpose," he added. Minu said Tk 70 lakh has been allocated in the proposed budget for Digital City Project and Tk 30 lakh would be spent for developing information technology (IT) to support small and medium industries. He said the project for bringing natural gas to Rajshahi through pipeline has been passed at the Ecnec, and the city would draw huge foreign investment after the implementation of the project. The mayor told reporters that Rajshahi would be the first among the northern districts to get the facilities of information super highway (submarine cable). He said steps would be taken to introduce more trains on Dhaka-Rajshahi route.
