Tornado sweeps 15 Tangail villages
50 hurt, 200 houses damaged

At least 50 people, including women and children, were injured as tornado swept 15 villages in Rashulpur and Dhalapara unions in Ghatail upazila in Tangail district Tuesday afternoon. The tornado that lasted about five minutes tore down over 200 thatched and tin-shed houses including newly built Dhalapara College, Kularampur Primary School, a mosque, and a madrasa and uprooted a large number of trees and electric poles. Local people said the tornado lashed 11 villages in Dhalapara union and four in Rashulpur. The affected villages are Konabari, Biljani, Barkara Takar, Chhapakuta, Pecharhata, Jaipara, Baro Medhar, Matia Ata, Ratna Ata, Khathalia Ata, Gangair, Ghandhi, Birjanlee, and Sarbari. Among the injured, 10 people have been admitted to Ghatail Upazila Health Complex and Dhalapara Clinic. Being informed, officials including Assistant Commissioner of Land in Ghatail Kazi Abed Hossain rushed to the area and supervised the rescue operation and sent the injured people to hospitals. The tornado also damaged banana orchards. Earlier, at least 10 people were injured as a nor'wester swept Debraj village in Kalia union in Sakhipur upazila Monday night.
