Caring for antiquities
Toothless archeology department failing to preserve our heritage
We are deeply concerned to learn about the deteriorating sate of preservation of some of our prized antiquities including an earthen stove as old as 500 BC at the Museum of Mahasthan in Bogra, one of the most prominent archeological sites in the country. In addition to this particular piece stored at the Museum there are other artifacts over 2500 years old. Archeological discoveries bear testimony to the history and heritage of a country. It also serves as one of the vital instruments in upholding the image of a country through introducing it to the rest of the world. We strongly believe that Bangladesh is rich in its archeological heritage, much of which remains unexplored. Alongside exploration of new sites, preservation of the existing sites and relics is also of vital importance. We are deeply shocked to learn, as revealed by a senior official of the department, that while only a few of the relics are preserved in suitable boxes at the Museum, most of the finds could not be displayed due to the lack of preservation boxes and space. These are stored unscientifically thereby making them vulnerable to ruination. We strongly recommend that an all round support be given to the Department of Archeology so that it is able to preserve our invaluable archeological artifacts. Investment of resources in this sector can be most rewarding and worthwhile. On the part of the Department it is imperative that it gears up all round supervision of the various sites and the museums on a regular basis. On the other hand, we frequently come across news of incidences of artifacts being smuggled out of the country. The Department in collaboration with the relevant agencies of the Administration must put an end to these losses of our national treasures and identify those involved and punish them as per prescribed law of the land. We sincerely hope that the Administration will quickly move to attend to this matter. One should realise that time is of essence here.
