Form judicial council to oust CEC
14-party asks govt

The Awami League-led 14-party opposition combine yesterday demanded forming a Supreme Judicial Council to oust ‘controversial' Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) MA Aziz and other two commissioners to ensure a free, fair and neutral election in the country.

At a meeting held at AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil's residence, the 14-party leaders asked the CEC and the two election commissioners to resign immediately or what they said people will force them to do so. Dilip Barua, the 11-party coordinator, chaired the meeting.

They also threatened to file a corruption case against them for wasting state money in drafting a fresh voter list. The Election Commission (EC) has also violated High Court (HC) directives by doing so, they observed.

The meeting vowed to resist any election in the country under the current EC for what they said the present EC has lost its credibility.

It also condemned the attacks on Awami League men in Bhola and on journalists in Kushtia.

The meeting expressed solidarity with the non-government primary schoolteachers, who are observing hunger strike at city's Muktangon to press home their demands for nationalisation of their jobs.

The opposition combine sits today with the leaders of different districts adjacent to the capital at 3:00pm and with the city leaders at 5:00pm to finalise the strategies for Dhaka siege programme on June 11.
