Rallies across country June 4 to condemn attack on press

Sangbadik Sramik Karmochari Oikya Parishad (SSKOP) will hold rallies on June 4 across the country in protest against the attacks on journalists in Kushtia, Chittagong and elsewhere in the country including on their leader The Bangladesh Observer Editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury.Meanwhile, different political, social, and non-government organisations expressed their deep concerns and condemned the attack on journalists' convention in Kushtia and forceful closure of a daily newspaper there. Announcing the protest programme at a meeting at the National Press Club yesterday, SSKOP decided to carry out work stoppage at all newspapers and news agencies from 11:00am to 2:00pm on June 4. A rally will also be held at 11:00am in front of the National Press Club on the day, says a press release. The parishad also demanded that the judicial commission formed to investigate the police attack on journalists at Chittagong Stadium should immediately submit the probe report and the responsible police officials and others involved in the attack should be punished accordingly. It also demanded compensation for the injured and others harmed by the attack according to the recommendations of the committee formed to assess proper compensations. Expressing deep concerns over the closure of the daily Andolon in Kushtia following attacks on it, SSKOP demanded that the local administration helps resume publication of the daily and ensures security for the journalists and employees of the newspaper. SSKOP Co-convener Fazle Imam presided over the meeting, while its other Co-conveners Mozammel Haque, Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Member Secretary Ruhul Amin Gazi, Joint Member Secretaries Motiur Rahman Talukder and Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, Members Abul Hashem, Khairul Islam, Altaf Mahmud, Elahi Newaz Khan Saju, Omar Faruk and Sarder Farid were present. Bangladesh Sangbadik Samiti expressed solidarity with the programme. Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (Naziur), Bangladesh Economic Association, Proshika, and Association of Development Agencies in Bangladesh (ADAB) also condemned the attack on the journalists' convention in Kushtia on May 29. Bikalpa Dhara demanded judicial probe into the attack and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.
