Jewellery traders keep shutters down to protest robbery

Members of Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BJA) yesterday kept their shops in the city closed in protest against frequent robberies.

BJA President MA Wadud Khan and Acting Vice-President Satyaranjan Brahma submitted a memorandum containing their six-point demand to State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar.

The demands include formation of a special team with members from police, CID, DB and Rab to investigate the robberies that took place in different jewellery shops recently,

arrest of the culprits involved in those robberies, recovery of the looted gold ornaments and adequate security of jewellery businessmen so that they can carry out their business without risk.

They also urged the government to provide police personnel to guard their shops from 9:00pm to 8:00am everyday, and reinforcement on the weekend and government holidays.

The association also said activities of the private security agencies should monitored, as the security guards provided by them were found involved in many robberies. It also called for enactment of a stringent law to deal with jewellery shop robberies.

Earlier, the jewellers held a rally at the city's zero point in support of their demands.
