100 hurt as cop attack Bhola AL men


Police yesterday charged baton and fired bullets to disperse the Awami League (AL) activists demanding uninterrupted power supply in Bhola town, leaving about 100, including journalists, injured.

The trouble began at about 10:00am when the law enforcers intercepted the AL activists from laying a siege to local power office at about 10:00am.

When the agitating AL men tried to go pass the barricade, the police charged baton on the agitators and fired bullets to disperse them. The AL activists swooped on the policemen, leading to a clash between the two sides.

Witnesses said the clash then spread to Bangla school crossing, Sadar Road, Gazipur Road, Kalibari Road and Natun Bazar area.

Four journalists and 13 policemen were also injured during the clash. AL alleged that local Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal caders attacked the newsmen.

The injured newsmen are Dainik Banglar Kantha Editor Habibur Rahman, Ittefaq Correspondent Afsaruddin Babul, Channel i Correspondent Afzal Hossain and Rtv Cameraman Kamrul Islam.

Police arrested seven AL activists from the scene.
