8 newsmen hurt as cops swoop on procession

Eight journalists were injured as police charged baton on journalists in a procession in the town yesterday.

The journalists wearing black badges took out a silent procession from Satkhira Press Club protesting Monday's attack on journalists in Kushtia by the ruling party cadres.

Witnesses said police swung into action when the processionists tried to enter the DC's office to submit a memorandum.

The injured newsmen are Kalyan Banerjee of Prothom Alo, M Qamruzzaman of UNB and Amar Desh, Habibur Rahman of Channel i, Mozaffar Rahman of Janmobhumi, Raghunath Kha of Patradoot, Manirul Islam of Ajker Kagoj, and photojournalists Ashrafuzzaman Asha andTamjibur Rahman Tamjid.

Defying police obstruction, the angry journalists later formed a human chain on the court premises for half an hour from 12:00noon.

They also submitted memoranda to the prime minister and the state minister for home affairs through the DC and SP demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits involved in the attack on journalists in Kushtia.
