Govt planning to rig polls thru' fake voter list
Alleges Hasina

Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged the lawyers to come up with ideas for taking legal steps to resist the "rulers' conspiracy" to rig the next elections.

"I am calling upon the lawyers to think how to foil the conspiracy of the ruling alliance," Hasina, also the Awami League (AL) chief, said when newly elected chairman of Tongi Pourasava Advocate Azmatullah Khan and 14 pro-AL commissioners called on her at the party's Dhanmondi office in the afternoon.

Accusing the government of making fake voter list, Hasina said that the government is planning to snatch the democratic rights of countrymen defying the directive of the High Court over the controversial list.

The AL chief also urged the countrymen to keep close watch on the process of making voter lists so that the real voters can vote the 14-party opposition combine to power.

The government is plundering crores of taka in the name of making voter lists, she further alleged.

Describing the AL's win in the just concluded Tongi municipal election as a red signal to the government, Hasina said, "Tongi election reflects the desire of the countrymen. People hate the coalition government as it has caused Bangladesh to be branded as a country of militancy, terrorism, women oppression and human rights violations."

The rulers are designing to rig the next polls as they have realised that people do not want them in power anymore, she added.

Terming the ruling BNP as "father of militancy" in the country, the AL chief said, "The pro-BNP terrorists are behind all militant attacks. Not only during this regime, BNP-Jamaat's terrorists were also behind the militant attacks launched during the last AL regime."

Hasina alleged that the government has turned people's lives into hell with the price hike of all daily necessities. "A well-organised syndicate led by Tarique Rahman, Harris Chowdhury and (Mosaddeq Ali) Falu is behind the price hike of essentials. They are plundering public wealth," she alleged adding that the BNP and Jamaat leaders are sharing the plundered public money.

The AL chief said a Jamaat MP, who was once a cap-seller at his local launch port, is now so rich that he threw party at posh Hotel Sonargaon on his daughter's wedding.

Tongi Pourasava chairman Azmatullah Khan was accompanied by his commissioners Abdul Alim, Salim Miah, Nasiuddin Mullah, Nazrul Islam, Abul Hossain, Ismail Hossain Babu, Asadur Rahman Khan, Sadek Ali, Nurul Islam, Kazi Abu Bakkar, Mujibar Rahman, Ferdous Zaman and Nilima Akhter Lili.

AL leaders Zohra Tajuddin, Obaidul Qader and Akhtaruzzaman were present among others.
