Second Test duly drawn

Ashwell Prince made an unbeaten century as South Africa preserved their series lead by drawing the second Test against New Zealand at Newlands Monday.

Prince scored 108 not out as South Africa made 512 all out in reply to New Zealand's first innings total of 593 for eight declared. With no prospect of forcing a result to level the three-match series, New Zealand were 121 for three in their second innings when bad light ended the match.

Prince batted patiently on a pitch that once again offered no help to the bowlers. It took him almost two hours to move from his overnight score of 70 to his fourth Test hundred, which he reached with a straight drive for four off New Zealand left-arm bowler James Franklin. He faced 259 balls and hit nine fours. The South African innings ended shortly after lunch.

New Zealand's opening batsmen again looked shaky against South Africa's new ball pair of Dale Steyn and Makhaya Ntini.

Man of the match Stephen Fleming, who scored 262 in the first innings, did not bat in the second innings. Scott Styris, who scored 30 runs in his first three innings in the series, batted in Fleming's usual place at number three and made an unbeaten 54.
