Writ in HC
Authorities asked not to allow toxic Alfaship to proceed further

The High Court yesterday ordered the authorities concerned not to allow MT Alfaship, a toxic ship now waiting at the outer anchorage, to proceed further towards the Chittagong Port.

A High Court bench gave the directive to the director general (DG) of Coast Guard, DG of the Department of Shipping, the collector of customs and the chairman of Chittagong Port Authority following a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) challenging the legality of the entry of the vessel into the territorial waters of Bangladesh.

The bench will issue a further order on the matter today, says a press release of Bela.

Considering environmental hazards, the Green Peace has listed the Alfaship as one of the 50 dangerous vessels. The Directorate of Shipping has already refused to allow opening of L/C for importing the ship for scrapping purposes.

On behalf of the Bela, Dr Kamal Hossain moved the petition. Tanjibul Alam, S Rizwana Hasan and M Iqbal Kabir assisted him.
