According to BBC's survey of the "greatest Bangla songs of all times", Ek shagor rokter binimoye Banglar swadhinata anley jara...came 5th. The song was originally sung by Swapna Roy during the Liberation War and was rendered by Rebeka Sultana in 1973 for Bangladesh Betar. The song was penned by Govinda Haldar and composed by Apel Mahmud. Artiste Swapna Roy of West Bengal rendered the song for Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. The song is a eulogy to the martyrs of this country whose ultimate sacrifice was the cost of our independence. According to listeners, as long as the "red and green" flows free in the air, the song will continue to inspire the nation. About the song, artiste Rebeka Sultana says, "Words cannot describe the emotions this particular song stirred up when it was played on the radio. In 1973, when Apel Mahmud asked me to render the song for Anurodher Ashor (a programme on Bangladesh Betar), I was ecstatic. I've performed this song so many times at programmes on radio, TV or cultural programmes, yet the level of attachment to the song remains same." Ek shagor rokter binimoye was also used in Chashi Nazrul Islam's Ora Egaro Jon, the first movie on the Liberation War made in Bangladesh.
