The International Theatre Institute (ITI, UNESCO) spearheads the annual celebration of International Dance Day on April 29. The date commemorates the birth of Jean-Goerges Noverre, a dancer par excellence, born in 1727.To observe the day, Bangladesh Nritiyashilpi Sangstha, a forum of dancers, chalked out a colourful event at the Central Shaheed Minar premises. The representatives of the several popular dance troupes of the country such as Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts (BAFA), Jago Art Centre, Benuka Lalitkala Kendra, Rewaz Performing Arts, Kathak Nritya Sampradaya, Nritya Nandan, Dibya Sanskritik Kendra, Nandankala Kendra and others performed in the programme. Noted dancers Rahija Khanam Jhunu, Minu Haque, Amanul Haque, Sharmila Bandyopadhaya, Belayat Hossain, Munmun Ahmed, Illias Hyder, Rafiqul Alam and Dipa Khondokar delivered speeches on the occasion. Mostafa Khan read this year's message, circulated by the International Dance Committee on the occasion of International Dance Day. This marks one more attempt to build bridges through art, by the International Dance Committee. The organisation has been working to promote solidarity among dancers ever since it was established in 1982. The intention of International Dance Day is to celebrate the art form in its universality, to cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers and bring people together in peace and friendship with a common language of dance. The programme was followed by a colourful procession.
