Muddle over names
DU student not allowed to sit for exams
DU Correspondent
Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Saturday did not allow a student to sit for an examination mistaking him for an expelled student.Vaswar Bhason Sharma, a first year student of physics department, came to the examination hall but, to his surprise, he came to know that he was expelled for beating a journalist. On April 24, the university authorities temporarily expelled three students, who are JCD activists, for beating Minar Baidya, a staff reporter of the daily Ajker Kagoj, at Jagannath Hall. The name of one of them, according to a notice sent by the authorities to different departments, is Vaskar Bhason Sharma, a student of physics (first year old). But the exam authorities have muddled Vaswar, who is innocent, with Vaskar. Vaswar, who claimed not to have been involved in politics, yesterday submitted an application to the registrar in this regard. The other two expelled students are Sanjoy Kumar Biswas of political science (second year) and Partho Dev Mondol of English (second year). Minar Baidya, a fourth year student of journalism department, was seriously injured when about 20 JCD activists beat him up and pushed him off second floor at Jagannath Hall on April 21 night. Minar filed a case with Ramna Police Station against 10 JCD leaders and activists, including Vaskar Saha, a second year student of applied physics department. Sources said the committee formed to probe the beating of Minar had made the mistake in the first place. Minar complained about Vaskar Saha to the committee, but it mentioned his name as Vaskar Bhason Sharma in the notice. When contacted, Prof Dr Nim Chandra Bhoumik, provost of the Jagannath Hall and convener of the probe committee, said he will have to go through files to check out information about the accused students. Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof AFM Yusuf Haider said he will look into the matter.
