One gets 37 years in arms case


A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced a man to 37 years' rigorous imprisonment for possessing illegal arms and ammunition.

Judge Md Nazrul Islam of the Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court handed down the sentence to convict Mainur Reza alias Khosru.

Earlier, the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of five prosecution witnesses.

According to the prosecution, a team of Detective branch (DB) police arrested Khosru at Darus Salam Road in the city's Mirpur are at about 4:25pm on October 15, 2004 with a bundle of books. The bundle contained a textbook, English For Today, a Meshkat Sharif, a suggestion book and a copy of the holy Quran.

Upon untying the bundle, the police found that the pages inside the books were cut off and two pistols, seven bullets and four magazines were placed inside them in a way so that nobody can suspect the existence of the materials, the prosecution added.

Police filed an arms case against Khosru the same day. The investigation officer (IO) pressed charges against him on October 29, 2004.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Shahidul Islam Sarder appeared for the state while Advocate Faruque Ahmed defended the accused.
