Tribute paid to Nasreen Huq

Women's and human rights activists and civil society members yesterday paid tribute to the memory of Nasreen Pervin Huq, country director of ActionAid.

At a memorial meeting at the Central Shaheed Minar in the city, they recalled her contribution to different fields, including women's and children's health and human rights.

The meeting began with a one-minute silence in memory of Nasreen, also a women's rights activist, who died following an accident at the car park of her residence on April 24.

Cultural personality Sara Zaker, who moderated the meeting, read out a paper illustrating Nasreen's contribution to various fields.

The speakers recalled her role in forging a movement against the eighth amendment to the constitution, which established Islam as state religion.

Hundreds of social activists, educationists, intellectuals and students took part in the meeting organised by ActionAid, Nijera Kori, Ain O Salish Kendra, Naripakkha, Nari Maitri, Mohila Parishad and Gonoshasthaya Kendra.

Several acid survivors rendered songs in memory of Nasreen who helped them in many ways with her own earnings.

Lazina Muna, sister of pilot Faria Lara who died in a plane crash during her training, recited an elegy Nasreen composed after the death of Lara.

Later, the participants lit candles at the Shaheed Minar and prayed for salvation of the departed soul and welfare for the humankind.
