12th Asian Art Biennale, Bangladesh
Mrinal's innovative sculpture wins Honourable Mention Award

Renowned sculptor Mrinal Haque is one of the winners of the Honourable Mention Award in the 12th Asian Art Biennale, Bangladesh. He has won the award for his sculpture titled Come for education... go for... In the sculpture human figures laden with bags are shown entering a machine and a few rational human beings and domestic animals as well as anti-social elements are seen emerging from it.

Mrinal said, "It is a social satire especially on our education system. There is a saying, 'Come for education and go for work'. But, what is actually happening? Students with good family backgrounds go for higher education, but what after that? How many of them are upright and how many have gone astray? If education is a fundamental right then why do students have to shell out lakhs of Taka to complete their graduation in their own country? That is why I have used 'Grenade', 'Pistol', 'Wireless' and 'Bayonet' instead of using 'Candle', 'Book' and 'Pen', as the 'monogram' of 'University'. And the machine in the sculpture represents 'University'. Steel and fibre glass have been used for the sculpture."

Mrinal Haque was the first to have made murals on sidewalks and major squares for the beautification of the city. Sculptures done by him beautify important buildings of the city which include the sculptures of Balaka at Motijheel intersection, sculptures and murals at Bangladesh Rifles Headquarter Gate, sculpture and mural at Rajarbagh Police Line Headquarter, murals at the VVIP terminal at the Dhaka International Airport, Chain Made Car at Tejgaon intersection and others in Dhaka city.

To quote Mrinal, "I want to take art from the living rooms of the elite to the masses. That is why I have done a lot of roadside murals."

Moreover, Subarna Jayanti Tower at Rajshahi University to celebrate the golden jubilee of Rajshahi University was made by him. His latest work is a sculpture at Chapainawabganj in memoriam of the Bir Sreshtha Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir.

Mrinal has also worked in New York, during his seven years (from 1996 to 2003) stay in the USA. Mrinal said, "I was one of the artists appointed by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs in the USA for the beautification of the city."
