70 garment workers hurt in stampede

Around 70 garment workers were injured, 16 of them critically, in a stampede caused by a thick black smoke emitting from the iron section of a factory building in the port city yesterday.A total of 5,000 workers were working in Golden Horizon Limited during the incident at about 1:00pm, sources said. The stampede occurred when apprehending a fire, the workers were rushing out hurriedly from the building. The critically injured included Mukta, 22, Panna, 20, Yasmin, 21, Sabina, 20, Nazma, 20, Luna, 20, Amena, 20, Renu, 22, Aklima, 18, Ruksana, 20, Rowshan Ara, 20, Shilpi Rani 20 and Shoilabala, 35. Sixteen of them were undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) while others were released after first aid. With this, around 200 garment workers were injured in stampede at different garment factories in Chittagong over the last 35 days.
