Financial irregularities at DU Social Welfare Instt
5 teachers urge action

Five teachers of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research, Dhaka University (DU), yesterday urged the authorities to take action against those responsible for financial and administrative irregularities in its evening master's programme.

The teachers, who are also members of the coordination committee of the evening programme, met DU Treasurer Prof Syed Abul Kalam Azad and informed him about the irregularities.

The five teachers are Dr Abdul Hakim Sarker, Dr Md Abu Taher, Prof Syeda Firoza Begum, Dr Mohammad Samad and Dr Md Nurul Islam.

On January 21, the Finance Review Committee comprising two former directors of the institute and a professor submitted a report, drawing attention of the institute director to the irregularities in the evening programme.

Sources said the treasurer will send a letter to the director through vice-chancellor in this regard.

Sources at the institute said Director Prof ASM Atiqur Rahman is allegedly flouting the rules in conducting the evening programme.

They said he spent Tk 6,21,156 for the development work of the institute without approval of the university.

They also alleged that Prof Atiq also deprived some competent teachers of their promotion.

When contacted, Prof Atiq said the development work was carried out as per the decisions taken at different meetings of the coordination committee and all the necessary materials were procured through the purchase committee.

Dismissing the allegation of halting promotion as false, he said the process of promotion of the teachers is underway, but it is being delayed because of various reasons.
