Philips introduces top-of-the-line phones

Philips launched five new GSM mobile phones in the Bangladesh market on February 28, introducing a new entry-level version, a music phone combining an MP3 player, digital camera and video recorder and a top-of-the-line business phone with extreme battery performance.

GS Balakrishnan, business director, wireless ASEAN+ cluster, Philips Electronics Singapore Pte Ltd along with local distributors Computer Source Limited organised the ceremony at the Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Centre.

All the phones are lightweight and compact, weighing below 100 grams and taking up less than 100 cubic centimetres space.

For consumers requiring a basic mobile phone with simpler functions, the Philips S200 meets their need. This entry-level phone is packed with polyphonic ring tones (16 tone midi melodies). The phone is available in the market from February and has a price-tag of Taka 3150.

The new compact clamshell phone Philips S800 is an MP3 player with 128MB of storage. It also has an easy to use USB connectivity with dragging options that makes it easy to store music and even other files from the computer. The phone also has a VGA camera with video recording capabilities. It is also packed with 64-tone polyphonic ringtone and eight different screen savers.

The 960 is the first Philips mobile phone with an integrated Real Music player that allows users to listen to MP3 and AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) music files.

It is possible to store up to eight hours of music in the resident memory, and extra capacity can easily be added by inserting an SD/MMC memory card into the phone's card slot. Users can put together an extensive playlist and effectively use their phone as a portable jukebox.

An extremely convenient 'drag and drop' feature means individual songs and entire albums can be transferred to and from other media such as portable digital audio devices or PCs via a USB cable or wirelessly by Bluetooth or via a WAP connection.

The 960 is also a powerful imaging device. The integrated 2 megapixel digital camera takes pictures at up to 1600x1200 resolution. Images can then be viewed in considerable detail on the exceptionally sharp 262K TFT LCD screen.

The same applies to the high-quality video clips that can be made with the phone's video recorder. Shooting at 30 frames per second, the end result has clarity and accurate motion reproduction.

The clamshell-design Philips Xenium 9@9e provides all the power needed to stay connected and take care of business with an extreme long battery life providing more than a month's standby time or 8.5 hours of talk time.

Along with its extreme battery life, the Xenium 9@9e will also keep the business traveler connected around the world, being a tri-band phone supporting the 900/1800/1900 bands.

The Xenium 9@9e has a 1.3 Megapixel (1280 x 1024 pixels) camera with 4x Digital Zoom for close ups, and the ability to take nine continuous shots at a go, saving picture files as GIF, BMP or JPEG files. Images are displayed on a 128x160 pixel UFB 65K color screen, while an 80x48 pixel monochrome OLED sub-display on the clamshell replicates information such as time, signal strength and battery life.

To connect to online multimedia services, the phone supports the GPRS class 10 (4+2) and WAP 1.2.1 standards. The phone uses Java 2.0, and implements SMS, EMS, MMS and e-mails.

To keep hold of vital information, the Xenium 9@9 can store details of up to 1000 people or businesses, with a maximum of five entries each (e.g. home, mobile, fax, work, etc). The phone's 20MB memory can also store up to 250 SMS messages.

The memory can also store up to 12 minutes of voice memos. The voice recording feature can also be used to create a 'secretary-on-the go', enabling the user to record a voice reminder of an appointment or deadline.

Last but not the least, the Philips 768 is a good looking phone packed with serious features such as MP3 player, 1.3 Megapixel camera, 512MB upgradeable memory and mini SD card expansion slot. The phone is available in the market from January and has a price-tag of Taka 16,750.
