150 MT hoarded sugar siezed in Thakurgaon, 6 godowns sealed

A mobile court in Thakurgaon seized 150 tonnes of sugar allegedly hoarded by traders and sealed six godowns yesterday.

Sources said, the mobile court led by First Class Magistrate Abdullah Hakkani raided 20 wholesale shops and recovered the sugar from six godowns, two of them owned by some traders in Dhaka.

None of the hoarders could be arrested.

Sources claimed that the hoarded sugar was bough from the blackmarket after it was lifted and sold by dealers of Setanganj Sugar Mill and Thakurgaon Sugar Mill.

They said due to black-merketing and hoarding, sugar price increased to Tk 56 per kilogram from around Tk 40 in different markers in northern districts.

They claimed that about 20 traders from Chittagong and other areas of the country collected at least 60 tonnes of sugar from the two mils in last seven days and stored those in different places in Thakurgaon for sale in the blackmerket.

Huge quantities of sugar were hoarded in different places in the district. Sensing raid, the traders disposed of some of the quantities in the last two days, the sources claimed.

The decision to conduct the raid was taken at a recent meeting of the district law and order committee, the sources said.

The drive against hoarding of sugar will continue and the culprits will be brought to book they said.
