90 RU teachers demand VC's resignation

Ninety teachers of Rajshahi University in a joint statement have demanded resignation of Vice-chancellor Prof Altaf Hossain for what they said the 'damage' caused to the university's image by the administration's silence as regards Islami Chhatra Shibir's 'outrageous open activities to save the mastermind behind the murder of Prof S Taher Ahmed'.

"The worst anarchic situation is now prevailing on the campus", the statement said.

RU Shibir president Shalehi is widely blamed as the mastermind behind the murder.

The statement said police findings and statements of three accused proved that Shalehi and a teacher of the university were behind the murder but the university authorities did not take any action against them.

"What is the qualification to get a job at RU?" the statement posed the question, claiming that many of the controversial 546 employees were appointed on recommendations of Jamaat-Shibir leaders.

The controversially appointed employees even assaulted teachers but the university authorities are firm on its decision about them despite protests by teachers, students and employees, the statement said.

They termed alleged involvement of RU teacher Mia Muhammad Mohiuddin in Taher's murder 'painful and shame' for teachers.

The VC, breaking rules, processed Mohiudin's promotion though it was rejected by the RU planning committee, the statement said.

The teachers also criticised the VC' for his role in continuing recruitment of teachers and officials when all on the campus are condoling Taher's death.

Signatories to the statement include Prof Zulfiqur Matin, Anik Mahmud, Dr Muhammad Abdul Jalil, Satil Siraj, Sayen Uddin Ahmed, Mahbubur Rahman, SM Abu Bakar, Muhammad Naser, PM Shafikul ISlam, Rahmat Ullah Imon, Dr Sujit Sarkar, and Farzana Nikkon, Sheikh Md Nurullah, Nilufar Yasmin, Hasibul Alam Prodhan, and Paddabati Kundu.
