Vaughan out of Test series

England captain Michael Vaughan has been ruled out of the current Test series in India with a longstanding knee problem and is 'not anticipated' to play in the subsequent one-day campaign, according to a statement issued here Thursday by the England medical team. The statement added that Vaughan who returned home before the ongoing first Test against India in Nagpur, had also undergone an ultrasound guided injection into his right knee following a visit to a specialist. The specialist has advised Vaughan to rest the knee completely for two weeks before recommencing his rehabilitation programme under the supervision of the Yorkshire Country Cricket Club physiotherapist. The statement added: "Michael has been ruled out of the current Test series against India. His knee will be re-assessed in due course but at this stage it is not anticipated that he will be fit for the One Day International Series in India." Fast bowler Simon Jones also visited the same specialist, having also been forced to return home early with a knee injury but the statement said an update on his condition would be issued in due course. Reverse-swing specialist Jones collapsed in the Nagpur nets on Monday minutes after Yorkshire batsman Vaughan was ruled out with a recurrence of his knee problem. Vaughan is struggling with a problem in his right knee which required surgery before Christmas and forced him to return home early from England's tour of Pakistan - while Jones twisted his left knee bowling in the nets. Jones tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the first Test at Brisbane on England's last Ashes tour in 2002-03 - an injury that sidelined the Glamorgan quick for some 18 months. In Vaughan's absence and that of vice-captain Marcus Trescothick, who has returned to England for personal reasons, England are being led by all-rounder Andrew Flintoff. At stumps on the second day at Nagpur, India were 136 for one in reply to England's first innings 393. The second Test will be played in Mohali from March 9-13 and the third in Mumbai from March 18-22 before the seven-match one-day series gets underway. England have not won a Test series in India since 1984-85 when David Gower's tourists came from 1-0 down to win a five-match series 2-1.
