He was identified as 'Kala' Faruk, 45, son of Chunnu Miah of Baroikhali village in Sreenagar upazila. Faruk was wanted in a double-murder and other criminal cases, police said.

Rab members arrested Faruk at his village home Thursday morning and recovered a gun from his possession.

On his confessional statement, the members of the elite force along with Faruk set out for Shekharnagar, 50-km from the town, at about 5:00am yesterday to recover the hidden firearms.

When they reached nearby Sreedharpur, Faruk's accomplices opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate.

Rab sources said Faruk was caught in 'crossfire' while trying to flee and died on the spot. Rab recovered one pistol and one shutter gun from the scene.
