DMCH steps to stop infant theft

Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) authorities have taken tough security measures to prevent incidents of infant theft at the maternity ward.

From now on 10 female security guards will guard different wards of DMCH in three shifts. They will also be vigilant while guarding the ward no. 15, the maternity ward, hospital sources said.

DMCH authorities have employed the guards following incidents of infant theft and trade of newborn babies which newspapers have published earlier.

"Whenever a baby enters or is taken out of the ward guardians will have to show a yellow certificate signed by the doctor," said a hospital guard adding that it would also prevent the possibility of babies being changed or swapped accidentally.

Meanwhile, the baby boy allegedly stolen from ward 15 on February 17 is still missing and his mother Mahfuza Begum waits at the hospital hoping to get back her 13-day-old son.
