Dr Kamal for independent body to probe Shaekh's case

Eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday suggested formation of an independent national commission comprising retired chief justices and experts to make a comprehensive, credible and transparent inquiry into the case of JMB kingpin Shaekh Abdur Rahman.

"Since it involves the question of national security, it is essential to dig out all information and evidence about sources of fund, inspiration and linkages within the state apparatus," he told the news agency.

Dr Kamal said at least three retired chief justices can sit and take views of the government and opposition parties and experts concerned to set up a five-or seven-member independent and neutral commission.

Such commission, he said, must have a high public standing and confidence to inquire into the matter and present a detailed report before the nation with recommendations. If necessary, the commission can seek assistance and cooperation from external experts and institutions.

He said when the question of national security is involved following the serial bombings by militant outfits, it should not be seen trivially or from petty partisan views. There are many instances in other countries where such independent commissions were constituted to get into the root of any serious national issue.

Dr Kamal said it will not be wise to make a quick investigation into the case of Abdur Rahman and punish him after trial by a speedy tribunal. It must be seen how this man could build up such militant network in the last seven years, what was his motive and who are with them.

Another jurist Dr Zahir told ATN Bangla television that Interpol, Scotland Yard and FBI could be invited to investigate the case of Shaekh Rahman if the government wants to prove its sincerity that it really wants to root out extremism.
