Experimental notes from Germany's "nuBox"

The band "nuBox" that delighted the audience at the German Club recently was formed in 1984.The musicians used to play in different groups before they came together to form the band. Reiner Winterschladen on the trumpet is self taught, while Alois Franz Kott, the electric and acoustic bass player began early with playing in a rock band. He started with classical guitar playing and later studied folk music in high school. Peter Ernest Eisold is well-known for his trips into the experimental and alternative concert scene. Peter too is self-taught although he has had some lessons in classical drum playing.

Alois did not have professional musicians in his family though both his parents enjoyed music. The families of the other two were also not keen in the beginning, as music does not often bring in much money. They said that they liked other types of music too and did not confine themselves to jazz. Peter said that his liking extended to ethnic music while Alois liked new and experimental music. Reiner said that he grew up in the sixties and seventies listening to free jazz music. He listened to hard rock too and liked that. Reiner went in to teach youngsters the basics of classical trumpet.

Jazz began in America and as they grew up in the sixties and seventies, they heard a lot of experimentation in jazz. Free jazz was a stream, independent of the American jazz and it had a free approach to improvised music. Asked what he thought of fusion music, Reiner said that it did not appeal to him that much although he liked pure eastern music as on the sitar and tabla. Alois and Reiner too like live and taped oriental music.

In the early eighties when the "Clubjazz" of the DJs was still in its infancy, the new music of Blue box shocked the jazz purists. Some called it "Techno jazz", others "No Wave Funk" or "Industrial Dance". Reiner, Alois and Peter began their international career and have so far performed not only in their neighbouring European countries but also in Asian countries like Nepal, Singapore and the Philippines.

Reiner is a member of the NDR Band since 1995 and is active on radio and television. Kott on the acoustic and electric bass is the founder of several ensembles, and has been a music professional for 30 years. Peter, on the drum, is reputed for his experimental and alternative concert scene.

"NuBox" continues to explore new horizons beyond jazz, Dance floor, avant-garde and Underground.

The group had been invited to perform in Karachi, Colombo, and several cities in India. "The impressions of the places was very compressed. We spent very little time in each city."
