Remove dust to protect environment
Bhuiyan tells roundtable

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan yesterday called upon all concerned to discharge their responsibilities, including spraying water in the streets, to remove dust that causes severe health hazards and environment pollution.

The dust pollution in the capital and other places in the country can be minimised if organisations concerned that have been constructing roads and buildings follow good environmental practice, he said.

He was inaugurating a roundtable on "Dust control and urban environmental improvement" organised by the Asian Institute of Millennium Environment and Development (AIMED) at the CIRDAP auditorium in the city.

State Minister for Forest and Environment Jafrul Islam Choudhury, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Larry Maramis and AIMED Vice-Chairperson Syed Mohammed Hussein and FEJB Chairman Qamrul Islam Chowdhury also spoke at the roundtable with Mahatab Uddin Ahmed in the chair.

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Prof Dr Mujibur Rahman presented a keynote paper on the urban environment issues and Dr Rezaul Karim on the concept of dust control project for Dhaka City.

Referring to the role of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) and other local government authorities in controlling dust, Bhuiyan said they could apply various measures available in their hands. If those are not sufficient, only then new laws can be enacted, he added.
