Staff Correspondent, Ctg
While the number of missing persons in the country's worst-ever industrial fire at KTS Composite Textile Mill at Kalurghat BSCIC Industrial Area on last Thursday remains uncertain, their relatives are still searching for them everyday in the hospital, police station, factory site and at other places. Some of the factory workers, who narrowly survived the inferno, however, said the total number of workers on that night would be around 500 to 550. And if their versions are taken into account, there still could be some missing persons, though it is very hard to ascertain the exact number. Fire Service and the police however dismissed any possibility of persons missing at this point. Fire department sources said they have winded up officially the rescue operation on Friday. "We recovered 51 charred bodies from the spot in the early hours of Friday and rescued around 100 workers with burn injuries, many of them left the hospital after recovery," said Deputy Director of Fire Service Rashidul Islam Majumder. Chandgaon Police said they have inquired many claims of missing persons but found no credibility to those claims. SURVIVORS' VERSION Abu Taher, 45, one of his two daughters Morsheda Begum, Md Aziz, a KTS storekeeper, and a teenage worker Riaz are among a very fortunate few who narrowly survived the deadly night. According to their versions, there were about 500 to 550 workers, mostly women, working in the factory that night. Taher's other daughter Sumi Akhter who was working in the sewing section at the time of the accident was burnt to death after being trapped inside the building. Taher said the sewing section was divided into ten lines (A,B,C, etc) and about 40 to 45 women workers were working in each line at the time while around 90 to 100 were at other sections and floors. Storekeeper Aziz, who jumped from the roof of the building to save himself, said the total number of workers could be a maximum of 550 that night. FOOD SUPPLIERS' ACCOUNT Two private firms near the KTS factory, Mohiuddin Enterprise and Al Amin Store supply food for workers of the factory. On Thursday it was Mohiuddin Enterprise's turn to supply food. A staff of the firm told The Daily Star showing a register that they supplied 520 packets of food to the factory on Thursday. Ismail, a staff of Al Amin Store, said they supply food for first eighteen days of a month and the number of packets varies from 480 to 500 everyday. BGMEA's First Vice President SM Abu Tayyab said it is really difficult to know the exact number of workers who were working at KTS that night. "We are trying to find the documents in this regard. Once we get the documents including the register or attendance book, I think, we would be able to know the actual picture of the injured or missing workers," he said.
