VC-backed panel sweeps JUTA election


"Sammilata Panel (SP)" backed by the incumbent VC swept the election of Jahanigrnagar University Teachers' Association (JUTA) yesterday.

Of the 15 posts, the SP won twelve posts while the Shikshak Oikya Panel (SOP), a conglomerate of pro-BNP-Jamaat and pro-AL teachers, won victory in three executive members posts. "Shikshak Manch", a panel formed by left leaning teachers, did not win any post in the election.

The election was held at the university club from 9:00am to 2:00pm where more than 300 teachers cast votes in a festive mood. The result of the election was officially declared at 5:30pm.

Prof Ajit Kumar Majumder was elected president from SP bagging 140 votes while his nearest opponent Prof Abul Hossain polled 126 votes. Prof Mahbub Kabir became secretary from SP panel securing 160 votes while his nearest rival Dr Md Mushiur Rahman got 142 votes. Prof Nurul Islam of SP panel was elected treasurer bagging 161 votes while his nearest opponent Dr A S M Badiar Rahman got 139 votes. Abul Kalam Azad was elected joint secretary from SP panel bagging 155 votes while his nearest rival Dr Golam Mustafa got 142 votes. Prof Sayed Kamrul Ahsan won the election in vice-president post from SP.

The executive members elected from SP are Prof Amin Mohammad Ali, associate prof Ahmad Reza, Faruk Ahmad, Kamrul Ahsan, Mustafa Feeroz, Shuma Mumtaz and Prof Hasina Matin. The three executive committee members elected from SOP panel are Prof Dr Abul Khair, Prof Dr Md Abu Saeed Khan and Dr Md Maniruzzaman of English department.
