Justice Mustafa Kamal tells JU convocation

The third convocation of Jahangirnagar University (JU) was held on the campus yesterday. President and Chancellor of JU Prof Iajuddin Ahmed inaugurated the convocation attended by thousands of former and present students of the university. Speaking on the occasion, he laid emphasis on life-related and practical education so that the students could show their skill in and outside the country. Speaking as convocation speaker, Justice Mustafa Kamal said the teachers and students must work together irrespective of party affiliations to raise the standard of education. "Our students are our strength. With their help, we will be able to build up this institution as internationally recognised one," said V C Prof Khandaker Mustahidur Rahman. Education Minister Dr M Osman Farruk, Pro-VCs Prof Imamuddin and Prof Enamul Huq Khan and deans of four faculties were present on the occasion. A total of 2,797 students who completed honours and masters from 1998 to 2003 received certificates at the convocation. Of them, 13 students received gold medals for their outstanding achievement while 68 students got M. Phil and Ph. D. degrees. After the ceremony, a rally of the graduates and teachers led by the chancellor was brought out. The entire university took a festive look as students dressed in traditional convocation-gown went from one department to another recalling their past memories in a cheering and emotional mood. Jahangirnagar University Photography Society organised an exhibition at the Teachers Students Centre while a cultural programme was held in the evening. The first convocation of JU was held on January 5, 1997 while the second one on February 17, 2001. The JU was established in 1971 with 21 teachers and 141 students in five departments under one faculty. Now the university has 32 departments including newly introduced four, 433 teachers and 8105 students.
