On information of a group of arms smugglers, a Rab team rushed to Shantir under Shahabazpur Union at about 5:30pm. Sensing the presence of the Rab men, the smugglers opened fire, prompting the members of the elite force to retaliate.

During the shootout, three of the gang received bullet wounds. They were rushed to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital where Shukurdi, 28, son of Giasuddin of Telkupi village died soon after admission. The two others, Rabiul, 27, and Khairul, 29, of the same village were sent to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.

Two pistols loaded with six bullets and three magazines were seized from the victims.

Major Farooq-e-Azam and another member of Rab received minor injuries.
