UNO withdrawn for failure to tackle situation

Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Rafiqul Islam has been withdrawn for mishandling the situation that led to the killing of nine people in police firing at Kansat.The district administration officials said the withdrawal order reached the deputy commissioner's office yesterday. He was transferred to Dhaka. Nine rural power subscribers were killed in two incidents of police firing at Kansat, as the subscribers were demanding uninterrupted power supply in the area Normalcy returned to Kansat following release of Golam Rabbani and eight others on January 31. Rabbani and eight others were arrested on January 22 on charge of instigating people to raise their voice against local Palli Bidyut Samity that led to the January 4 police firing, in which two youths were killed. The arrests triggered a violent protest, resulting in the killing of another seven people in police firing on January 23.
