Masud Mia, ex-Habiganj SP axed
Unb, Dhaka
The government has fired two police officials for patronising militancy and Bangla Bhai by one and for failure on another's part to give security of opposition Awami League lawmaker Kibria's life. Official sources said yesterday Special Superintendent of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and former SP of Rajshahi Masud Miah and former SP of Habiganj district Abu Musa Md Fakrul Islam were terminated on Tuesday. Sources in home ministry said two departmental cases were filed against them earlier for their lapses as top brasses of Rajshahi and Habiganj police administrations. Masud was sued on charge of patronising militancy and the activities of the banned Islamist outfit Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB) under the command of Bangla Bhai when he was the SP of Rajshahi district and DC of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP). Former SP of Habiganj Fakrul Islam was suspended after Awami League leader and former finance minister SAMS Kibria MP was killed along with four others in a grenade attack on an AL rally in Habiganj on January 27, 2005. The action against the two police officials came amid raging criticisms and opposition agitation particularly on the issues of militancy in the wake of recent countrywide bombings and the earlier grenade attacks and slaying of Kibria.
