The rally was organised to mark the Mirpur Liberation Day.

On this day in 1972, at least two hundred people including 41 army men and one hundred freedom fighters led by film director Zahir Raihan sacrificed their lives to liberate Mirpur from the occupation of Pakistani forces and their collaborators.

People of Mirpur observed the day through holding rally and bringing out procession to pay homage to the martyrs.

Salma Begum, mother of Selim who was martyred on this day, presided over the rally addressed by Sector-4 Commander Major General (Retd) CR Dutta Bir Uttam, Major General (Retd) KM Shafi-ullah Bir Uttam, Proshika Manabik Unnayan Kendra President Dr Kazi Faruque Ahmed, Prof Abdul Ahad Chowdhury, Zahir Raihan's son Anol Raihan and acting president of Nirmul Committee and journalist Shahriar Kabir.
