Goalkeeper Sultan Ahmed Shakil pulled off three saves to help Dhaka lift the Second JFA Cup Under-16 football title with a 3-2 victory in the penalty shootout yesterday. The regulation 90 minutes ended 2-2 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, taking the final into the tiebreakers. Man-of-the-match Shakil, who made a brilliant diving save in the very first penalty taken by Tangail captain Liton Barman, stopped efforts by Maruf and Raj to bring an end to the show after Jewel Rana, Kibria and Ranabir had converted their spotkicks for Dhaka. It were Tangail, however, who took the lead in the match when Awal scored from an 11th minute penalty kick. Dhaka equalised on the stroke of the breather when Biplab drove a volley into the roof of the net just inside from the penalty area. Controversial Dhaka forward Jewel Rana, an over-aged player who was denied a chance to play for Narayanganj in the first edition of the competition last year, put Dhaka ahead in the 66th minute when he drilled a low drive into rival keeper Liton's near post. But Tangail, fighting back against their more matured opponents, made it 2-2 nine minutes from time when Liton Barman's exquisite volley on a right-flank corner by Ranajit found the net. Tangail's Rafiq was the top scorer of the tournament. Mosaddek Ali, MP, distributed trophies after the final as chief guest. The tournament, however, was marred by participation of over-aged footballers, especially champions Dhaka. Before the start of the final rounds, the medical committee of the Bangladesh Football Federation had declared only nine Dhaka booters eligible to play. But the tournament committee later overruled the medical committee decision and allowed all the teams to field over-aged players.
