Tougher action if govt disrupts long march
Warns 14-party meet

The 14-party opposition combine yesterday directed its leaders and workers to take up tough anti-government programmes if the ruling alliance bars them anywhere from participating its February 5 long march towards Dhaka.

The opposition leaders at a high-level meeting of the 14-party at the Awami League (AL) office in Dhanmondi accused that the BNP-Jamaat coalition government has already begun harassing their leaders and workers in different parts of the country ahead of the long march.

Presided over by AL President Sheikh Hasina, the meeting also criticised the police excesses under government directive in the name of security measurers.

Meeting sources said Hasina warned the alliance government of tougher movements if such harassment continues and any obstacle is created to foil the long march.

Talking to The Daily Star 14-Party Convenor and AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil said the meeting discussed overall preparation for the long march.

Another 14-Party senior leader told The Daily Star that if the alliance government creates any trouble to foil the long march, they would go for the "final" anti-government movement that might include indefinite hartal across the country.

14-Party senior leaders including Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Haque Inu, Tofail Ahmed, Motia Chowdhury, Abdur Razzaque, Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal, Saifuddin Ahmed Manik, Nurul Islam, Dilip Barua and Bimal Biswas attended the meeting.
