Opposition to force govt to go for reforms
Says Hasina

Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the opposition will take part in the next election, compelling the BNP-Jamaat coalition government to carry out reforms in the caretaker government system and the Election Commission.

The leader of the opposition was speaking to journalists at her Sudha Sadan residence, where the party leaders and activists came to greet her on the New Year.

Hasina alleged that the BNP-Jamaat alliance is preparing a new voter list in a bid to deprive the pro-Liberation War people, members of the minority communities and Awami League supporters from their right to vote.

She said the ruling alliance has resorted to such tactics also to plunder the national wealth. The AL president said there is no need for a new roll as the purpose could be served by revision of the existing one.

She said an end to the misrule of the coalition government would get the country out of the prevailing miserable situation.

Referring to the overall situation, the AL president said the people do not have the peace of mind at this time of the 'despotic coalition regime'. The government gave them nothing but days filled with horrors of killings and oppressions.

She alleged that the coalition government has turned the country of food surplus to a country of food deficit.

Hasina said the people are very anxious about the unbridled price hike of essentials, bomb and grenade attacks and rise of Islamist militancy in the country 'under state patronisation'.

She said the ongoing opposition movement will free the nation from the 'clutches of Khaleda-Nizami'.

Central leaders of the AL and its front organisations exchanged New Year greetings with the AL president as she entertained them sweetmeats.

Sheikh Hasina's younger sister Sheikh Rehana was also present there.
