Silk makers fail to tap German market

Despite huge potential in German market, Bangladeshi silk producers fail to export their products as those are not manufactured following international standards, officials of German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) said yesterday.

Although the quality of Bangladeshi silk products is below than that of India or China, there is much scope to improve it, said Weijers Paul, GTZ program coordinator, during a briefing while he was visiting some silk shops at Mirpur in the capital.

Germany has demand for silk products for household uses, he said adding:

"We want to give technical and financial support to this sector of Bangladesh."

Paul said presently there are around 97,000 people employed in this sector, and export of silk products could bring a change in the country's economy.

GTZ has already launched a programme titled 'Progress' to give financial and technical assistance including training, disseminating information on market access and customers' demands to the entrepreneurs, he told a group of visiting journalists.
