7th National Cricket League

Ctg, Khulna in the runs

Chittagong and Khulna enjoyed run feasts unlike Rajshahi on the first day of their four-day National Cricket League matches at different venues across the country yesterday.

Masumuddowla (73) and Nazimuddin (86) missed their chances to reach the magical three figures but Faisal Hossain was still in sight of a hundred as Chittagong gave holders Dhaka a very tough day, scoring 334-6 at stumps at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium.

National all-rounder Manjarul Islam, however, made no mistake to achieve the mark as Khulna rode on his 108 to finish the day on 305-8 against lowly Barisal after a 68-run victory in the shorter version against the same side at the Khulna Divisional Stadium.

Away at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra, pacer Hasibul Hossain and left-arm spinner Enamul Haque Jr ruled the day for Sylhet to restrict Rajshahi to 236-8. Sylhet lost their one-day game by seven wickets.

DHAKA-CHITTAGONG
Dhaka, who won the limited-overs game by 21 runs, missed regular new ball pair Shahadat Hossain and Talha Jubair, both nursing minor injuries, but Anwar Hossain Munir gave the breakthrough by removing Chittagong captain Nafees Iqbal in the very third over.

But the morning did not show the day.

Gazi Salahuddin joined opener Masumuddowla to repair the early damage during a 103-run for the second wicket before the former was the first victim of Mohammad Rafique, the most successful Dhaka bowler with 3-59.

Salahuddin scored a 73-ball 47 with eight fours and a six.

Ace left-arm spinner Rafique kept the home team in contention after lunch when he trapped Masum lbw on 73 off 121 balls and dismissed Ehsanul Haque in successive balls as Chittagong stumbled to 153-4.

But Nazimuddin and Faisal Hossain defied the hosts, piling up 126 runs for the fifth wicket. In his 151-ball strokeful innings, Nazim smashed 13 fours.

Left-hander Faisal was not out on 77 with Ahsanullah Hasan supporting him on 10 when stumps were drawn for the day.

Dhaka also rested inspirational opener Javed Omar, who hit hundreds in both innings in the previous game, as he was complaining of back pain.

KHULNA-BARISAL
After an early hiccup Manjarul made a diligent hundred as the home team finished the day on a high note.

Struggling at 28-3 after losing captain Habibul Bashar (18), Manjarul joined his national teammate Tushar Imran (34), to share 70 runs for the fourth wicket.

The left-hander then got good support from Sagir Hossain in an association of 84 runs for the seventh wicket. Sagir scored 56 off 88 balls that produced nine boundaries.

Manjarul's five-hour knock finally came to an end when he was bowled by Marshal Ayub. He hammered 11 fours and two sixes in his 224-ball essay but it was number eight Abdur Razzak who helped his side cross the 300-mark with a 95-ball 56.

RAJSHAHI-SYLHET
National pacer Nazmul Hossain initiated the early Rajshahi collapse picking up the first two wickets while veteran Hasibul and young left-arm spinner Enamul shared the rest.

Naeem Islam top scored with 58 off 108 balls with nine hits to the fence while opener Farhad Hossain added 48 from 142 balls that saw five fours. Rajshahi captain and national wicketkeeper Khaled Mashud had another disappointing day as he made only 12.

Hasibul finished with 3-40 and Enamul conceded 53 runs for his three scalps.
