Awal placed on 10-day remand

Abdul Awal, son-in-law of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman, was shown arrested in a case filed for the August 17 bomb blasts and remanded yesterday.Awal was placed on a 10-day remand in the case filed for the August 17 blast near Jatrabari footbridge. Awal alias Ashique, JMB in-charge for the August 17 blasts in the Rajshahi region, is one of the seven members of Majlish-e-Sura, the top tier of the banned outfit. He was arrested in a Dinajpur-bound bus when it reached Thakurgaon bus stand in the afternoon of November 18. The Detective Branch (DB) of police produced Awal before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, Dhaka at 3:00pm under tight security. The investigation officer (IO) sought for a 10-day remand for interrogation. The forwarding report placed before the court by the IO stated Awal was directly involved in the August 17 bomb blasts. His accomplices exploded bombs across the country including at Jatrabari on his directions, the report read. He needs to be quizzed to find out the vital clues to the bomb blasts and whereabouts of his accomplices, the IO stated in the report. Following the hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Abdur Rouf Khan granted the remand prayer.
