Crowd trouble mars Italian Cup tie
Afp, Florence
Fiorentina and Juventus players were forced off the pitch at the start of the second half of their Italian Cup tie here Thursday after police fired tear gas to disperse groups of rival supporters. Police fired several gas cannisters after rival fans clashed inside and outside the stadium. Dense smoke from the cannisters smothered one end of the stadium and left fans and players alike clutching material to their mouths and eyes, while some rival fans could still be seen to be baiting others through glass partitions. The referee then ordered the players into their dressing rooms. Fiorentina were leading 1-O at the time after a goal by Bulgarian Valeri Bojinov. Play in the first leg clash resumed after a 40-minute delay with Juventus eventually fighting back to clinch a 2-2 draw.
