Good start for SL U-19

Captain Angelo Mathews led his side from the front as Sri Lanka managed a 13-run victory over England in their first match of the Tri-nation Under-19 Cricket Tournament at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium yesterday.

The Sri Lanka Under-19s rode on a blazing 70 by Mathews to score 225 all out in their share of 50 overs after deciding to bat first. They later dismissed their opponents for 212 in 48.2 overs.

With the defeat, the English side which suffered a four-wicket loss to Bangladesh in the opening match, continued their losing-streak in the tour as they had experienced a 5-0 whitewash against the BCB High Performance Squad during preparation.

Mathews smote nine boundaries in his 74-ball unbeaten essay while opener Sameera Soyza scored 32 off 44 balls with five hits to the fence.

Hamilton Brown was the most successful England bowler picking up three for 44.

In reply, most of the England batsmen got some starts but none could carry their innings for the cause of victory.

Woodman was the top scorer with a 60-ball 49 and Wright remained not out on 44 off 33 balls.

Sachithara Srasingha claimed three wickets conceding only 23 runs in 10 overs as a most successful Sri Lanka bowler.

Bangladesh face England today at the same venue.
