Bangladesh's flying start in U-19 meet

A swashbuckling 83 off 62 balls by Sakib Al Hasan steered Bangladesh to an emphatic four-wicket win over England in the opening match of the tri-nation under-19 cricket tournament at BKSP yesterday.

The number four batsman smashed 13 fours and two sixes as Bangladesh, chasing England's 208 all out, stormed to 210 for six with 6.1 overs to spare at the sports institute in Savar.

Bangladesh lost both hard-hitting in-form opener Tamim Iqbal and one-down Rakibul Hasan on the score of 19, but Sakib repaired the early damages during a 60-run stand for the third wicket with Mahdi Hasan, the other opener who made 28.

Sakib then dominated an 85-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Mehrab Hossain before being dismissed by England's most successful bowler Moeen Ali, who captured 3-23. The combative Bangladesh batsman smote pacer Robert Woodman for 20 runs in one over and a further 19 from off-spinner Brown.

The home side then lost three quick wickets, crashing to 185-6 from a comfortable 164-3 but Mehrab kept his cool to complete the job with a patient 62 not out, featuring half a dozen boundaries in 118 balls.

Earlier, Mehrab and new ball bowler Dollar Mahmud took two wickets each to restrict England to a moderate total. The visitors, who had lost five warm-up games in the build-up to the tournament, lost their last four wickets for 24 runs.

After being sent into bat, they lost the openers cheaply but Moeen Ali also starred with the bat, making a 91-ball 70 -- studded with six hits to the fence -- to take the total past 200.

Meanwhile, England's today's match with Sri Lanka at the Fatullah Stadium has been rescheduled for tomorrow due to a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal.
