Dhaka win match, but Barisal win hearts
Clean sweep for Sylhet in Chittagong

Sylhet pulled off an exciting four-wicket victory over Chittagong while defending champions Dhaka toiled hard to manage a 95-run win against spirited Barisal on the final day of the four-day National Cricket League match at different venues across the country yesterday.

An unbeaten 87 by Golam Rahman powered the successful Sylhet chase of a 236-run target that also completed the double delight for Rajin Saleh's men, who also won the one-day fixture against Chittagong by 48 runs.

Resuming the day on 231-4, Chittagong skipper Nafees Iqbal declared their second innings at 284-9, leaving the visitors a challenging target in 69 overs. Sylhet reached the summit with more than three overs to spare.

The defeat meant Chittagong became the second home side to stumble after Rajshahi, who lost to Khulna with nearly two days to spare. However, other hosts Dhaka avoided similar embarrassment but not before Barisal giving them a run for their money.

Dhaka now took solo lead in the four-day table with maximum 12 points from two matches.

The third round will start from December 3.

DHAKA-BARISAL
Barisal might not have achieved a record-breaking target but they won lot of hearts showing real longer-version temperament in the second innings.

Bowled out for only 131 in their first innings, Barisal batted for four sessions in their second essay and scored 400 while chasing an improbable victory target of 496.

Dhaka captain Mohammad Ashraful, who was the most successful bowler with 5-137, made early inroads by removing overnight batsman Shahin Hossain after Barisal resumed on 215-3. But out-of-favour Hannan Sarker and Humayun Kabir were not ready to quit without a fight.

The pair added 76 runs for the fifth wicket before Hannan, starting the day on 32, offered a catch to wicketkeeper Anwar Hossain off Mohammad Rafique. The right-hander clobbered eight boundaries and a six to make 73 from 179 balls.

Left-handed Humayun scored a brave 66 off 143 balls but support at the other end was less then impressive.

Left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique finished with 4-102.

Despite their spectacular second-innings fightback Barisal captain Shahriar Nafees was disappointed with the result.

"It was not impossible to chase the target because batting on that pitch was easy, especially after the second day. Actually we desperately needed one batsman to carry the innings to the end," said the left-handed national opener, who scored 76 in the second innings.

National and Dhaka opener Javed Omar was adjudged man-of-the-match for scoring hundreds in both innings.

CHITTAGONG-SYLHET
Golam Rahman played the sheet anchor role as Sylhet dashed the home team's hopes of avenging their one-day defeat.

Nafees Iqbal declared their second innings twenty minutes before the lunch, leaving Sylhet to score 236 in 69 overs.

Opener Golam Rahman, who was the highest run-getter last season, occupied the crease for more than three hours to take Sylhet to the target with 20 balls to spare.

The left-hander played 204 balls to score 87 runs with only three fours.

Captain Rajin Saleh was the other notable scorer with a 74-ball 31 while man-of-the-match Alok Kapali, who hit 156 in the first innings, added 24.

"Our only target was to play the allotted overs and Rahman did that although it was not easy to bat on a worn out fourth-day wicket," said Rajin.

Earlier, Sylhet pacer Hasibul Hossain captured three more Chittagong wickets in the morning to finish with 5-48.
